Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are fused aromatic rings comprising carbon and hydrogen atoms alone. They are found in oil, coal, and tar deposits, and are produced as by-products of fuel burning (whether fossil fuel or biomass). Approximately 400 PAHs are amenable to analysis by gas chromatography of which the following are the most commonly looked for:
- Acenaphthene
- Acentaphthylene
- Anthracene
- Benz(a)anthracene
- Chrysene
- Dibenz(a,h)anthracene
- Fluoranthene
- Fluorene
- Naphthalene
- Benzo(b)fluoranthene
- Benzo(j)fluoranthene
- Benzo(k)fluoranthene
- Benzo(a)pyrene
- Benzo(e)pyrene
- Benzo(g,h,i)perylene
- Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene
- Phenanthrene
- Pyrene
- Coronene
