PAHs at i2 analytical Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are fused aromatic rings comprising carbon and hydrogen atoms alone. They are found in oil, coal, and tar deposits, and are produced as by-products of fuel burning (whether fossil fuel or biomass). Approximately 400 PAHs are amenable to analysis by gas chromatography of which the following are the most commonly looked for:

  • Acenaphthene
  • Acentaphthylene
  • Anthracene
  • Benz(a)anthracene
  • Chrysene
  • Dibenz(a,h)anthracene
  • Fluoranthene
  • Fluorene
  • Naphthalene
  • Benzo(b)fluoranthene
  • Benzo(j)fluoranthene
  • Benzo(k)fluoranthene
  • Benzo(a)pyrene
  • Benzo(e)pyrene
  • Benzo(g,h,i)perylene
  • Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene
  • Phenanthrene
  • Pyrene
  • Coronene
