Like the LC-MS/MS system above, the GC-MS/MS or GC-triple quad, uses the same mechanics of separating charged masses and fragmenting them with ultrapure nitrogen.
Useful only as a qualitative tool, the GC-MS/MS enables ultralow detection levels in even the most complex matrices. This technique is used for the same compounds as standard GC but where the required reporting limits are beyond the reach of the standard GC-MS system.
Compounds
Typical compounds and groups analysed by GC-MS/MS include:
- Phenols/cresols/xylenols (low level)
- SVOCs (low level)
- PCBs (low level)
- PAHs (low level)
- Brominated flame retardants (low level)
